Assistive Technology

Welcome to the Assistive Technology Wiki. Assistive technology consists of "any device that disabled children (or adults) might use to help them learn and function more effectively." (see Education World in sidebar). If you begin with the SETT method (Student, Environment, Tasks, Tools), you will develop technology that aids the student in what he wants to do. A description of this process can be found at LD Online in the sidebar.

Web Accessibility became important when the government passed  Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act in 1996. Businesses who wanted contracts with the government found they had to follow the accessibility guidelines (see sidebar) laid down in this Act.

One outgrowth of the use of assistive technology has been the movement for "Universal Design." Universal Design is a philosophy that insures all users rights to access such things as sidewalks, buildings, computers, and the Internet (to name a few), with devices created based on their needs. More information can be found at the link to the Center for Universal Design in the sidebar.
